A guide to cosmetic surgery in Dubai
It's said to be a must-do for some reality TV stars. Cosmetic surgery in Dubai is apparently a trendy wish. Dubai has sometimes been in the eye of the storm. At the start of the 2010 decade, the emirate city entered a financial crisis that almost left it bereft. The cause was the crisis of an alternative model to the all-oil and gas model of its Middle Eastern neighbours and the end of a speculative bubble around luxury real estate. But Dubai is still Dubai, and despite the global crisis, the emirate is still welcoming tourists and newcomers. Apart from visiting the gigantic malls and towers that reach for the clouds, people come to Dubai to have cosmetic surgery.
It's not just English reality TV stars who have chosen this country. Kim Kardashian was spotted in a Dubai clinic in 2017.
The clientele of plastic surgery clinics in Dubai is rather wealthy. You have to be financially comfortable to make the trip and have the operation. Paradoxically, while wealthier people come to Dubai for surgery, wealthier and less wealthy Dubai residents go to Turkey for cosmetic surgery, bariatric surgery and intimacy surgery.
The price of operations is all the more expensive because the clinics are so luxurious and the small emirate attracts plastic surgeons from all over the world.
In the districts of Deira, Bur Dubai, Dubai Downtown and the more recent Dubai Creek Harbour, you will find clinics and hospitals where a variety of plastic surgery operations are performed.
Dubai is all about oversized towers, luxury, glitz and glamour, artificial islands and huge constructions that bite into the desert. But that's not all it is. In the historic district of Deira, you can shop in the inexpensive souks similar to those in the working-class districts of Arab capitals. Affordable accommodation in Dubai is also possible: in Deira there are hotels from as little as 20 euros a night.
But rest assured. It's possible to spend even a non-surgical holiday in this country without breaking the bank. For example, in the malls near Jumeirah beach, you can eat in snack bars where prices are very affordable. Don't think of Dubai as a city full of overpriced gourmet restaurants.
Cosmetic surgery in Dubai is expensive. For example, a breast augmentation with implants costs up to €9,000. By way of comparison, breast implants cost around €5,000 in Paris and from £2580 in Turkey (Medespoir prices).
Why is it so expensive? Because the costs associated with the operation, such as the use of the operating theatre, are 2X more expensive than elsewhere. A plastic surgeon in Paris pays 500 euros to the clinic compared with 1000 euros in a hospital or clinic in Dubai.
In Dubai, you can undergo cosmetic surgery. Specialist surgeons also perform reconstructive surgery, such as breast reconstruction.
Rhinoplasty in Dubai is carried out by local surgeons as well as by French, Korean and American plastic surgeons.
In the emirate, it is not uncommon for patients to be advised to undergo rhinoplasty using ultrasound, the very latest in cosmetic nose surgery.
There is a tendency to want to reduce strong noses on the part of women from districts of the city but also from other emirates. For men and women from Dubai and other countries with less financial means, the trend is to go to Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Morocco or Tunisia for a nose job.
To improve women's curves, in particular their buttocks, the Brazilian Butt Lift is performed in Sharjah or JBR by local, British, American, French, Korean and Indian cosmetic surgeons.
The proximity of the wealthy inhabitants of the other emirates, the Qatari and Saudi women, also makes Dubai a Mecca for aesthetic medicine. As in Egypt, the combination of the tastes of music and film stars, the standard of living and new trends explains the appetite for treatments such as resorbable products or fillers to fill in wrinkles. Clinics in Jumeirah and the Canal district offer a wide range of dental treatments, including gingivectomies, braces, bridges, implants, invisalign and non-prep veneers.
And while Turkey remains the world's leading destination for hair transplants, Dubai is also a popular destination for hair implants. The presence of French clinics specialising in hair transplants is testimony to this interest.
